Alexandra Nikolaevna, Duchess of All the Russias, stayed at the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees in 1870. A large magnolia tree in the hotel grounds was named after her on the occasion of her visit. Legend has it that the Grand Duchess engraved her name on the glass of a window of one of the halls using a diamond.
